Every item of food that is donated or received by West Suburban Community Pantry is inspected by volunteers or staff to ensure safe consumption. Sometimes we provide food that is past the date marked – that doesn’t mean it isn’t safe and good to eat.  Dates on food are NOT for food safety! They are intended for quality or retailers, NOT whether or not food is safe to eat.

Here is a quick guide:

Sell-By Date:
Tells the store how long to display the product for sale.
Use-By Date:
The last date recommended for the product while at peak quality.
Expiration Date:
The last date recommended for the product while at peak quality.
Best-By Date:
Tells customers the date by which the product should be eaten for the best flavor or quality.
